With nearly fifteen years of experience as an educator, I’ve taught and developed English Language Arts curriculum for elementary, middle-school, high school, undergraduate levels. My breadth of teaching experience has taught me to view curriculum development as holistic and progressive. I believe that an excellent curriculum meets the rigor of high standards while honoring the student’s cultural context and personal experience. Notable recent projects have included:
Rewriting Greek myths for a 5th grade reading level
Fact-checking and updating popular science articles for middle-school and high school students
Designing a visual arts-based creative writing curriculum for students in 1st-5th grades
Creating reading comprehension and writing skills assessments that are aligned with Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and Common Core State Standards (CSS)
Developing and leading fiction workshops for adult learners
Consulting sessions begin with a few questions about the vision you have for your manuscript, where you think it currently stands, and your ambitions for your work. Based on your answers and after carefully reading your manuscript, I will give you supportive feedback on how you can take your writing to the next level.
I’m a voracious reader who loves something from every genre and style, although I’m especially partial to character-driven literary fiction, slipstream, and stories with a deep sense of place. I enjoy helping writers who’ve faced rejection or who are working on an MFA portfolio.
I’ve covered food, wine, health and wellness, TV, books, and have profiled dozens of entrepreneurs and working professionals. Credits include The New York Times, Modern Counsel, Hispanic Executive, NPR’s The Desert Companion, Spirituality & Health, and Walla Walla Lifestyles. Please contact me for clips.
